A few observations about Sems from spoken Tibetan: The word Sems means both “mind” and “heart.” For example, in my understanding, the Sems is what has thoughts as well as dreams, emotions/afflictions and all experiences. And when people talk about Sems, almost always they point to their chest, where the heart center would be. Although some people who I think are more influenced by modern, rational thought would point to their head.
